Research brief
Protein intake and muscle during weight loss
What is reasonably well supported about protein and muscle preservation during weight loss, what is being extrapolated, and what has not been studied in the people now asking the question.
The short version
How much protein preserves muscle when appetite is suppressed by medication?
- Evidence
- Insufficient — not enough evidence to say either way
- Studied in
- Mostly adults in supervised weight-loss programmes, many with resistance training alongside, and mostly predating widespread GLP-1 use. Very little of it in people eating as little as this brief's readers are.
- Uncertain
- Whether the intakes those programmes used apply during medication-driven appetite suppression, where total intake is often much lower and protein is harder to reach at all. The direction is not in doubt; the number is.
